First Food & Friends

This ministry of hospitality and sustenance welcomes 80-150 people for fellowship and a nourishing lunch every Saturday at 11:30 a.m. This takes place at The First United Methodist Church, 5401 Centre Ave Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15232.

Prior to lunch, guests are welcome to participate in a Bible Study at 10:30. At least once each month health professionals from First United Methodist Church of Pittsburgh offer blood pressure screenings and information concerning health care. Patrick Haver is the executive director and welcomes hearing from you if you wish to have more information and or would like to volunteer. You may contact him at (412) 580-1522.

Prince of Peace members volunteer the second Saturday of every other month. Whatever the meal is, you will help make it, serve it and you will get to eat lunch too. Then of course you get to clean up afterwards. Other than that, a smile and a listening ear as well as a willingness to work is all you need! You will leave feeling tired and grateful.

Our next volunteer day at First Food & Friends Soup Kitchen will be Saturday March 9, 2019. There is a sign up sheet in the hallway by the Luther Room. We would like to have at least 12 volunteers if possible. You must be 12 years of age or older to volunteer.

We will be accepting donations year round. You will find a blue bin in the hallway outside of Luther room. We are looking especially for coats, scarves, hats, mittens, gloves, warm socks, sweaters and boots mainly for men, but they can also use women’s items too. We can also take personal care items. “First Food & Friends” Soup Kitchen is at 5401 Centre Ave, Pittsburgh. You can meet us there at 9 am, but parking is limited, or you can carpool with us.

Please be at the church, ready to leave by 8:15am.

You are asked to dress comfortably (shorts are fine) and wear your Thrivent or “God’s Work, Our Hands” T-shits… we have Thrivent shirts for anyone who needs them! NO Flip-Flops! Rubber soled shoes, preferably sneakers are important. Whatever the meal is, you will help make it, serve it and you will get to eat lunch too. Then of course you get to clean up afterwards. Other than that, a smile and a listening ear as well as a willingness to work is all you need! You will leave feeling tired and grateful.

Easter Bunny Breakfast

Join us for breakfast with the Easter Bunny at Prince of Peace Luthern Church, Saturday, April 13, 2019. There are two seatings available: 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Includes breakfast, crafts, egg hunt, and pictures with the Easter Bunny. Cost: $5.00/person, ages 2 and up. Everyone is welcome - friends, family and neighbors. Reservations necessary. SCRIPT Program (Gift Cards)

SCRIP Program (Gift Cards) - Do you understand our Scrip Program? Scrip Program are fund raising gift cards. The same gift cards you would normally purchase from a retailer in your local retail stores, especially Giant Eagle, and they work the same way. You’ll find cards to can use at grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, movie theaters, home improvement stores, and almost any business that accepts gift cards. They also make great gifts for any occasion. Virtually anywhere you shop will accept some form of Scrip.

Prince Of Peace receives a rebate for every card sold. Each month the proceeds are designated for a specific project. April orders benefit Lutherlyn. Lutherlyn is a church camp in Butler, PA which combines the love of God with fun, friends, swimming, playing in the woods, adventure challenges. Bible Study, worship, cookouts, campfires, discoveries in nature, games, and a few surprises into an unforgettable experience! Family Camp, Retreats and events throughout the year make this a treasure for ALL ages!

Script card orders are placed every other week. Orders can be picked up the following week. Interested? Complete a Script Program order form, found on the table in the Narthex, and submit along with payment to Lorie Snyder or Pastor Allyn.

SCRIP CARDS INVENTORY are available for immediate purchase for Darden (Olive Garden), Giant Eagle, Home Depot, Sheetz, and Wal-Mart. See Lori Snyder or Pastor Allyn if you need a card ANYTIME!




Narrative Lectionary

Each week we will have one scripture lesson on which we will spend some time preparing for, asking questions about and studying. March 17th sripture will be Laborers in the Vineyard (Matthew 20:1-16). If you have questiions concerning this passage, contact Pastor Allyn by Thursday, March 14 and she will attempt to address them in her message.

Synod Assembly Lay Voting Members Needed

Our congregation is asked to send two voting members (1 male / 1 female) to the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod of the ELCA assembly. The assembly is June 13 - 15, 2019 (Thursday through Saturday) at California University of Pennsylvania. We will be communting and Pastor Allyn will be happy to drive. If you are interested in attending, contact Pastor Allyn




What Is A Scam

The Borough of Pleasant Hills is presenting a program titled "What Is A Scam"? It will cover 'How to Avoid Becoming a Victim of a Scam' and 'Steps to Take if You Have Been Scammed'. March 20, 2019. 9:30am - 11am. Community Room - Pleasant Hills Borough Building. Presented by: Warren King, Better Business Bureau and Chief Brian Finnerty, Pleasant Hills Police Department. Light refreshments served.




Tax Help Available

Need tax help? See information on the 'Tree' in Luther Room hallway. Assistance is available at Pleasant Hills Library, from AARP Tax Help volunteers.




Upcoming It's A 'Burgh Thing" Events

Tue, June 4, 2019, 6pm – 8pm. This will be a Water Marbling Art Class (no experience necessary) with Leann Schmidt. We will have an opportunity to make a scarf, pillow, tie, coaster and more. Stewardship

Special envelopes are available to offset winter costs such as heating bills and snow removal.

WE NEED PEOPLE TO:

Our congregation, community and world need prayers. God wants a deeper relationship with each of us. The Holy Spirit has gifted each of us with skills and passions that can build up the body of Christ in amazing ways! Stewardship is time, talent and treasure. Stewardship is about an intimate relationship with God. Stewardship is a response to God’s love for us.

What will your stewardship plan be for 2018? Prayerfully consider your response with time, talent and treasure to the love you have received in the life, death and resurrection of Christ!

If You Are Hospitalized

Please be sure to ask the hospital to contact the church AND ask a friend or family member to contact Pastor Allyn at 412-719-8811. Due to privacy policies regular & consistent notification of the church no longer occurs.




Prayer List

The Prayer List is erased the first of each month. Please add names to be remembered to the Prayer Board outside the office door or by filling out a ministry card and placing it in the offering plate.




Enough Milk and Water Jugs

Clean, empty milk and water gallon jugs are used in collecting aluminum pull tabs. We have enough jugs for now so please do not bring any more in until further notice.




Sponsorship

There are still plenty of 2019 openings available. Cost of: Flowers~ $40week, Bulletins~ $15.00/week, Eternal Candle~ $20.00/month, Communion Wine~ $35.00/month. You can find the schedule on the bulletin board in the Luther Room Hallway. When sponsoring altar flowers, bulletins, eternal candles or wine, sponsorship letters are given or sent out the month prior. Theses letters must be returned to the office 2 weeks prior to the sponsorship date for the dedication to be put into the weekly bulletin. You may return the letter by mail or in person or email to the office. The 2019 Schedule is now available.
